The tragedy of Flight 752

On January 8, with the crash of Ukrainian International Airlines Flight 752 just after takeoff from Tehran, Canada suffered a loss that was of a magnitude not experienced for many decades. Initially called an “aviation accident” by the Iranian authorities, it was subsequently revealed to be a missile attack that took the lives of 57 Canadians along with an additional 100 or so individuals who had ties to Canada. The country was in shock, grieving and angry.

Iran concealing coronavirus figures, blocking independent reporting

According to Iranian official reports today, the coronavirus epidemic has killed 15 people and infected a total of 95 in the Islamic Republic, which seems to be concealing information about the epidemic in line with China’s example. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemns Iran’s persecution of media outlets and journalists publishing independent information.

Jailed French academic Adelkhah hospitalised in Iran: lawyer

French-Iranian academic Fariba Adelkhah, jailed in Iran since last year, has been transferred to a prison hospital after her health deteriorated following a hunger strike, her lawyer said Tuesday.

When a major storm knocked out our electricity for a few hours recently in Charlotte, North Carolina, where I live with my family, I posted a brief complaint on Facebook. A few friends extended their sympathy for my minor misfortune, but none struck me as hard as one friend in Yemen, which has been wracked for years by a brutal civil war. He mentioned, without intending to provoke the guilt I suddenly felt, that his family has been without power for more than three years.

Will Iran replace its presidency with a parliamentary system?

On Aug. 15, 2019, Ezatollah Yusefiyan-Molla, the MP for the city of Amol, announced that 151 out of Iran’s 290 parliamentarians had signed a letter calling for the amendment of the constitution, whereby the country’s presidential system would be replaced with a parliamentary one. Yusefiyan-Molla then added that as Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had dismissed the idea, no discussions about this subject would take place until the end of the 10th Parliament.
