Subject: AI call to investigate November 2019 Protests in Iran!
Date: May 26, 2020
Madame High Commissioner,
We are writing to you in regards to Amnesty International’s (AI) May 21, 2020 detailed and important report[i] concerning the protests of November 2019 in Iran. According to this report more than 300 men, women and children were killed in peaceful protests.
In part of this report, we read “The prevailing impunity afforded to the security forces allows the recurrence of lethal force to crush dissent. In the absence of any meaningful prospect for accountability at the national level, we reiterate our call to members of the UN Human Rights Council to mandate an inquiry into the killings, and identify pathways for truth, justice and reparations.”
The Union for Secular Republic and Human Rights in Iran thanks AI for their detailed investigation and fully support their call for UNHCHR to further investigate and to seek justice for the families.
Far too long the Islamic Republic of Iran has failed to come clean on their criminalities in Iran. To name a few, the 1988 massacre of political prisoners, to the downing of Ukrainian passenger plane in January 2020, to the mismanagement of coronavirus pandemic and now the indiscriminate shooting of protesters!
With offices in Europe, North American and Australia, we are available to provide additional information about the human rights situation in Iran. We call for the establishment of a fact-finding commission on the suppression of peaceful protests, with a combination of the families of those killed and members of the UN Human Rights Council, and the publication of the results of the investigation.
We call on human rights organizations and institutions to support the call by Amnesty International to protest the repression and killings, arrests and torture in Islamic Republic prisons, and the issuance of cruel sentences against civil society activists. Those arrested must be released immediately and call on our compatriots and international community to work for an investigation into the November massacre of peaceful protesters in Iran.
With Respect,
Mehdi Amini
