Stop all Executions in and free all Political Prisoners in Iran!
Faced with several protests by the Iranian people and fearful of additional protests, the Islamic Republic of Iran has handed several protesters heavy and disproportional sentences of death penalty in order to intimidate them. Currently three young protesters named Amir Hossein Moradi, Saeed Tamjidi and Mohammad Rajabi face imminent execution.
Their only alleged (not even proven) crime is said to be protesting the lack of basic human rights recognized under article 20 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR) and Article 27 of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s constitution. According to reliable sources eight others yet unnamed Iranians are facing similar punishment.
Two of the three condemned young men had left Iran seeking Asylum in the neighboring country of Turkey. The Government of President Erdoğan, knowing full well the Iranian laws also include capital punishment, returned them to Iran with little respect for international laws.
Another person facing execution is Journalist Ruhollah Zam. He ran the Amadnews website, a popular anti-government forum which Iran accuses of inciting the nationwide protests of 2017-18. On July 9th of this year an unnamed man was executed in the city of Mashhad for drinking alcohol.
Needless to say, Iran has never had an independent judicial systems or any fair trials and due process of law.
The Union for Secular Republic and Human Rights in Iran condemns these verdicts and demands the Islamic Republic of Iran to rescind these unjust verdicts and free them immediately. We also condemn this obvious disregard of International laws by the Government of Turkey and find them just as guilty as the Islamic Republic of Iran should the verdicts are carried out.
Last week, thanks to Iranian and Non-Iranians concerned for the safety of these young people a twitter Storm under the hash tag of #اعدام_نکنید (#StopExecutionInIran) became a top trend on the social media with nearly 4 million twitts that caused disruption on Internet access in Iran.
In addition, with the Corona Epidemic and lack of health facilities in the prisons of Iran, we are also concerned about the safety and health of political prisoners in Iran. Specifically, we are concerned about Ms. Nasrin Sotudeh, a human rights lawyer who has been in prison since 2011 and Ms. Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian Human Rights activist. According to a letter she has sent out from prison she has been tested positive with Coronavirus and we are concerned about her life.
We ask all concerned individuals, human rights organizations and foreign governments who do business with Iran, to put pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran to halt any executions and to free all political prisoners in Iran.
