Call to action in support of Human Rights in Iran

Call to action in support of Human Rights in Iran

On December 10, the world celebrates Human Rights Day. On this occasion, a group of Iranian mothers issued a statement seeking justice and accountability for the massacre and brutal execution of their beloved children in 1988.

The Union for Secular Republic and Human Rights in Iran welcomes this call and will do its share to fulfill their demand.

They write, "We are deprived of the right to free elections, the right to form independent Political Parties, trade unions and Syndicates (the government does not tolerate even independent charities and non-profit organizations), the right to peaceful assembly and protest, and other rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. If we object to these deprivations, the government's response to the protesters and critics is imprisonment, torture and execution."

In the summer of 1988, thousands of political prisoners, many already towards the completion of their prison sentence, were arbitrarily executed and secretly buried in unknown locations without the knowledge of their families.

What occurred in 1988 in Iran is a true instance of Crime against Humanity, yet many of those involved in this crime have lived freely and some have taken high position in the Government of the Islamic Republic or Iran.

We hope/ask the International community especially those in their respective governments who deal with Iran to help us seek justice for grieving mothers by addressing the continuous and systematic violation of Human Rights in Iran.

We end this statement with another passage from their letter:

"We are talking to you, you who are not in the hands of an authoritarian and totalitarian government and you live in countries that enjoy the benefits of human rights and the rule of law and are not afraid of arrest, torture, imprisonment and execution.........You can unite and effectively defend "human rights" of the oppressed people of Iran at home and fulfill your historic mission."
