In Solidarity with protesting People of Iraq

In Solidarity with protesting People of Iraq

We, the nations of the Middle East, are victims of traditional tyranny, the backward ideology of Islamic fundamentalism, foreign intervention, and human rights abuses.

The crime of assassinating Ihab al-Wazni, the coordinator of the protest movement in the city of Karbala, was a very sad event and hurt the conscience of the world public opinion. This tragic event showed that the assassination machine does not intend to stop in Iraq and pursues the sinister goal of silencing political and civil activists opposed to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s interference and ideological Shiism in Iraq's internal affairs.

The use of inhumane methods, repression, assassination and imprisonment to intimidate the opposition and force society to surrender to absolute power is a pattern of behavior that has greatly disturbed the spirit of Iranian society in recent decades. We know very well how deep the wounds of this violence are and what causes the anger and disgust.

The methods used to assassinate political activists and journalists opposed to the Islamic Republic of in Iraq have considerable similarities to similar incidents in Iran. Therefore, the finger of blame is on the Islamic Republic of Iran, and especially on the organization of the Quds Force, which does not hesitate to commit any crime for its own political purposes.

We believe that the disarmament of the Popular Mobilization Forces and proxy military groups or aligned with the Islamic Republic of Iran and the prevention of the formation of a military-ideological institution such as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iraq is a right and intelligent demand. As Ayhab al-Wazani sacrificed his life on these demands, seeking justice for his assassination could strengthen the struggle for national sovereignty and respect for civil rights in Iraq.

The people of the Middle East, especially the two nations of Iran and Iraq, which have many cultural and civilizational commonalities, face the same fate. The consolidation of democracy and the establishment of human values and human rights in each country strengthens the people in other societies, and on the contrary, any crime against humanity in any country affects the whole region.

Therefore, the Union for Secular Republic and Human Rights in Iran, while condemning the assassination of Ihab al-Wazni and emphasizing the need to identify and punish the perpetrators of this crime, declares its support for the protests of the Iraqi people against the destructive intervention of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Iraq. The Iraqi government has a responsibility to take more serious measures to ensure the security of independent Iraqi political and civil activists. The inability of the judiciary to deal with the perpetrators of previous assassinations and the lack of justice have made the violent in Iraq more bolder.
