Ebrahim Raisi is not the President of the Iranian People!
On June 18, 2021, Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) held its thirteenth Presidential elections. As previously predicted by political pundits, Ebrahim Raisi came on top among the seven candidates for this post.
Ebrahim Raisi, known as a Chief Judge of IRI, previously served as the head of Judiciary and had run against incumbent President Hassan Rouhani. He was one of the four people in the prosecution committee, responsible for the execution of thousands of political prisoners in Iran in 1988, which is labeled Death committee by Islamic Republic of Iran's opposition groups and some western media.
Elections in Iran has been far from fair and equal. All candidates are vetted by a group of 12 known as the Guardian Council (GC) that has the ultimate decision with regard to candidates' qualifications. This time around was no difference. Of the nearly 529 candidates, GC approved only seven.
Many in the opposition including the Union for Secular Republic and Human Rights in Iran had called for the boycott of the sham election and by all accounts, the number of participation was at all-time low. By their own account participation was 42 percent but according to experts, is was between 30 to 37 percent.
In part of a statement by Amnesty International, released June 19, they state” We continue to call for Ebrahim Raisi to be investigated for his involvement in past and ongoing crimes under international law, including by states that exercise universal jurisdiction.
“It is now more urgent than ever for member states of the UN Human Rights Council to take concrete steps to address the crisis of systematic impunity in Iran including by establishing an impartial mechanism to collect and investigate evidence of the most serious crimes under international law committed in Iran to facilitate fair and independent criminal proceedings.”
Our organization fully supports this call and our members are ready to make this a reality and bring Raisi to justice that he deserves. We ask Human Rights Council follow the all by Amnesty International.
