We support the Struggle of Iranian and Afghani Women for peace and gender equality
Over the last week fundamentalist regime in Afghanistan, the Taliban has taken draconian measures to prohibit women’s access to education as well as work place. This move is opposite to the promise they made after coming to power for the second time following the US withdrawal from that country.
The Union for Secular Republic and Human Rights in Iran condemns this move and asks the international community to stand with the women of Afghanistan as they have with the Iranian women over the last few months.
The regimes in Afghanistan and Iran are two sides of the same coin. Both regimes limit the role of women in the society in two different ways.
We have a common enemy and that is the Islamic fundamentalists. The brave women of Afghanistan and Iran have resisted this policy peacefully however they have been brutally suppressed.
Afghanistan is a neighbor of Iran with over three million of its citizens living and working in Iran. Most Afghanis speak the same language as Iranians. Hence, there is a special connection between the two nations, each being ruled by fundamentalists.
We salute the Afghani women and hope to see a future Iran and Afghanistan where women and men live in peace and gender equality.
